Food Groups

This Word Bank supports writing about food groups and healthy eating.

The words are arranged under the following headings: Fruit, Vegetables, Starchy Foods, Meat, Fish, Eggs & Pulses, Milk & Dairy Foods, and Fats & Sugars.

The focus of this set is on nutritional (rather than scientific) values and properties of foods, and the groups reflect the common use of the foods in everyday cooking and eating. For example, scientifically speaking, an aubergine is a fruit, but is generally eaten in savoury dishes as a vegetable, so it appears in the Vegetables group; a potato is a vegetable but it is classified nutritionally as a starchy food, so it appears in the Starchy Foods group.
